Production

This is a devised play produced by the 2018 batch of the Stages Senior Ensemble. Its cast included members of the Senior Ensemble as well as guest artists.

The production set out to reduce the divide between art and real life, creating a shared experience between people, rather than a performance viewed by an audience.  It used real love letters and true experiences of the artists. It was performed in an intimate space with actors mingling and interacting with the audience.

Devising

This play emerged from a devising process led by the members of the Stages Theatre Group Senior Ensemble. It was the culmination of a 15-week actor-training workshop.  The devising process began during a residential retreat when artists decided to use their own love letters as a starting point.
‘Love’ has great potential to bind people in vulnerability. This aided the devising process, which pushed actors to strive toward sharing truth and genuine emotions, instead of hiding behind a character.

Rehearsals

After the concept of Love and Other Objects was agreed on, the team worked on developing the script derived from their own love letters.
For three months the ensemble experimented with how their love letters could be performed.  The young artists were given the time and space to experiment with the art of devising so that they may own the process themselves.  The leaning towards a sharing of experience rather than a performance became something the group wanted to pursue.
