After 20 years of producing live theatre productions, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic left us, like many others, feeling debilitated. What could we do? How could we help artists, families, and the most vulnerable amongst us - children - respond creatively to these unprecedented challenges?
ARTIST COMMISSIONING AND FESTIVAL
CHILDREN IN LOCKDOWN ARTIST COMMISSIONING AND FESTIVAL, curated and run by Stages Theatre Group, and supported Kindernothilfe, the Goethe Institut and the German Embassy, is an island-wide initiative which connects artists with the challenges faced by children in the COVID-19 pandemic. This artist commissioning program, curated by playwright Ruwanthie de Chickera and film-maker Malith Hegoda, commissioned 20 artists (both adults and children) to respond creatively to the theme of ‘Children in Lockdown’ by producing either artworks (plays, books, films etc) or artist interventions (workshops, talks, campaigns etc) that address the issues children faced during the pandemic.
The Children in Lockdown Arts Festival will showcase
the commissioned artists and their artworks in a festival which will be open to public, in November 2021.
Until then… watch this space!
